Why Are We Stiff in the Morning?

Do you feel stiff as you get out of bed in the morning? You’re not alone. That stiffness or achiness can be the result of muscle tightness, arthritis or worn joints. Did you know that our bodies naturally have built-in ibuprofen so to speak? It’s an anti-inflammatory protein that cycles throughout the day with peaks and valleys much like cortisol, blood sugar and insulin.

It’s at its lowest level first thing in the morning. That’s why we tend to be stiffer in the morning because our body’s natural levels of anti-inflammatories aren’t at the peak of where they need to be.

Making sure that the body is functioning optimally through proper alignment is the first and foremost thing to address. That’s because then the body isn’t working so hard and sucking these compensations so our biochemistry can work appropriately.

Hydration and Supplementation

There are some other simple things you can do avoid stiffness. These include staying adequately hydrated throughout the day and taking supplements at night such as magnesium or ginger, as they help the muscles and nerves relax.

Another way we provide pain relief in the practice is through Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC), which exposes the body to temperatures low enough to trigger a universal anti-inflammatory response.

The client is placed in a Cryosauna for a brief period—just one and a half to three minutes. What happens is the client’s skin surface temperature lowers quickly and significantly enough to accelerate the body’s response without causing any damage to tissue.
